A Cut Above: Talented students deliver killer production of Sweeney Todd

Ten Manchester-based Co-op Academy schools came together this July to deliver an unforgettable production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Running from 9-12 July at Co-op Academy Manchester’s theatre, the show thrilled audiences and celebrated the incredible talent and collaboration of students and staff from across the Trust.

Following months of rehearsals and preparation, students from Co-op Academy Belle Vue, Broadhurst, Failsworth, Manchester, Medlock, New Islington, North Manchester, Swinton and Walkden took to the stage for this ambitious retelling of Stephen Sondheim’s dark masterpiece. With support from an 18-piece live orchestra, professional-standard technicians and a team of dedicated staff volunteers, the production was a shining example of the Trust’s commitment to collaboration and excellence.

Leading the cast, Michael Yakubu delivered a powerful and brooding performance as Sweeney Todd, while Amy Bent brought wit and wickedness to the role of Mrs. Lovett. Both captivated the audience with their talent and command of Sondheim’s demanding score and were a real joy to watch perform. The whole cast was equally impressive, with students from across the Trust demonstrating talent and stage presence far beyond their years.

The production was co-directed and produced by Regional Director Steve Brice, who praised the students’ dedication and professionalism. He said: “This show is musically complex, emotionally intense and very technically ambitious but our young cast and crew rose to every challenge.

“I was so impressed by the cast's talent and maturity and can't thank colleagues enough for dedicating their time to supporting our production. It’s a phenomenal demonstration of what can happen when we strive for excellence and succeed together.”

Director, Philip J. Hindle, added: “'Sweeney Todd' is such a challenging show to mount and yet our talented cast, crew, staff and volunteers showed what can be done when we succeed together. It's incredibly humbling to witness all the time energy and dedication which went into producing this musical.

“Full credit should go to the inspiration behind it all, Regional Director, Steve Brice. His dedication to the Arts as a tool for empowering young people is visionary. I could not be more proud of all the team and the support we received from Dr Chris Tomlinson and our Central colleagues. Thank you each and every one of you."

This year’s Trust production of Sweeney Todd was testament to the dedication, creativity and teamwork of students and staff alike. It was, without doubt, a cut above.
