A new space supporting families at North Manchester

A new community space is helping local families at Co-op Academy North Manchester, with the launch of the CANM Cabin bringing practical support to the heart of the community.
The Cabin opened its doors on 29 September, welcoming everyone to access a range of essentials, with no referral or sign-up needed.
The idea builds on the community fridge concept championed by Hubbub. Community fridges help people share surplus food that might otherwise go to waste, making it freely available to local people. They’re open to everyone and help bring communities together, as well as making better use of food and resources.
At North Manchester, the Cabin takes this idea a step further. Alongside essential food items, visitors can find hygiene products, pre-loved baby equipment and essentials, and a book swap. It’s about making everyday life that little bit easier for local families, while creating a welcoming space where people can connect and support one another.
And it’s already making a difference! In its first four weeks, the Cabin welcomed 77 visits, with an estimated combined saving of £2,310 for those attending. That’s money that can go towards other household essentials, helping to ease some of the pressure families face.
The Cabin has been made possible thanks to the support from a number of local and national partners. Manchester City provided £4,000 through its Neighbourhood Investment Fund to help buy essential equipment, with further support from MCKS Charitable Foundation UK, The Hygiene Bank, One Stop Moston Lane and In Kind Direct, which donated £700 towards essentials.
Susan Roberts, Academy Community Pioneer, said:
"The CANM Cabin is a great example of what can happen when a school and its community come together. It’s about making support accessible to everyone, helping families with everyday essentials and creating a welcoming space where people feel connected. It’s brilliant to see the difference it’s already making.”
The CANM Cabin is one of a growing number of Community Fridge initiatives operating across our academies. Each one reflects our values by bringing people together, responding to local needs and finding practical ways to make a positive difference.
