Delius and Southfield shine at City of Culture film premiere

Young filmmakers from two of our special schools in Bradford took centre stage on 17 June, as their original films premiered at the Pictureville Cinema within the National Science and Media Museum.

The event, attended by 120 guests, was the idea of Co-op Academy Delius assistant headteacher, Aimee Helie, and was designed to ensure accessibility and inclusion within Bradford's City of Culture celebrations.

The “Bradford in Film” Project, as part of the “Special Schools City of Culture Programme" saw pupils from special schools Co-op Academy Delius, Co-op Academy Southfield, Beechcliffe, Beckfoot Phoenix and Hazelbeck make and star in their own short films which were shown at the premier.

Assistant Headteacher, Aimee, said: “We wanted the pupils in our specialist schools to be as involved in the City of Culture celebrations as possible, in the most appropriate way, which led to a creation of a five-topic curriculum, with "Bradford in Film" being a key focus.

“Schools worked on the topic in different ways, but the end goal was to make our own films and premier them in Bradford. The Science and Media Museum loved our idea, and offered to host the event in their Pictureville Cinema.”

Pupils on the Comets Pathway at Co-op Academy Delius learnt all about the story of The Cottingley Fairies and worked together to make props including fairies, before learning a poem by Rose Fyleman to help bring the story to life on film.

Pupils, Families and special guests were invited to see the premier to celebrate the culmination of the pupils’ hard work and creativity.

“The atmosphere was electric,” continued Aimme, “and we’re so proud of our pupils and everyone’s hard work.

“Two of our fabulous Year 6 students from Co-op Academy Delius hosted the entire event, introducing each school's film and keeping the crowd going - they were absolutely brilliant and the feedback from attendees has been overwhelming.”

One parent described it as "a fabulous evening," extending thanks to "all involved for their hard work and a special well done to the fabulous hosts, what a great job they did!"

Another parent, whose daughter appeared in a film for her current high school after previously attending Delius, said: "We really enjoyed it! My daughter used to attend Co-op Academy Delius and really enjoyed watching everyone and seeing her friends from other schools on the big screen."

"We are so proud of our link with the Bradford Science and Media Museum,” said Aimee, “they really do go the extra mile to make sure our pupils get the most exciting opportunities and really help us build aspiration in our pupils and their families!”
