Science Technician Wins The Salters’ Technician Award

We’re delighted to celebrate John Dilger, Senior Science Technician at Co-op Academy Grange, who has been recognised nationally with The Salters’ Technician Award. This is one of the highest honours for school science technicians in the UK.

This award, presented by The Salters’ Institute, celebrates the vital contribution that school science technicians make to education in schools. Each year, up to three awards are given to technicians who go above and beyond to support their students, drive improvement, and make a positive difference in their departments.

John’s success follows a rigorous application process, and comes soon after he also achieved Registered Science Technician (RSciTech) status through the Association for Science Education (ASE) earlier this year - a professional accreditation recognising high standards of skill, knowledge, and professionalism.

John’s work at Co-op Academy Grange has had an enormous impact on staff and students. He leads the technical team, champions safety, manages resources, and continuously looks for ways to improve how science is taught and experienced across the academy. He also trains and supports teaching staff in practical science and health and safety, helping to ensure lessons are safe, engaging, and effective.

When asked about his achievement, John said:

“I’m incredibly proud to have received the Salters’ Technician Award, and just as proud of the team that made it possible. Science technicians are often behind the scenes, but our work is essential in helping teachers bring science to life and inspiring students to explore the world through practical science.

This recognition highlights not only the vital role technicians play in education, but also the collaboration and commitment that defines our work at Co-op Academy Grange.”

Beyond his own school, John regularly supports other technicians across Co-op Academies Trust and leads discussions at the termly Technicians Forum - sharing best practice, offering advice, and helping raise standards across all our schools.

“John’s award from Salters’ comes hot on the heels of his professional registration as a Science Technician. Both are fantastic achievements and well deserved, given John's commitment and passion to his role. John is an invaluable asset to the Trust, regularly supporting technicians in other schools and leading discussions in our termly Technicians Forum. He is a kind, generous man who wants the best for his colleagues and our students.” - Sam Mortimer, Director of Science, Co-op Academies Trust

Sam also added:

“John's recognition is a reminder of the hard work of all our science technicians, who are often the unsung heroes of our science departments. Whilst their work supporting practical lessons may be most visible, their behind-the-scenes efforts - managing stock, preparing materials, ensuring safety, and supporting extracurricular activities - are absolutely essential to the success of science teaching across our schools.”
