Co-op Academy Portland achieves ‘Good’ in all areas Ofsted rating

Staff, students and families at Co-op Academy Portland are celebrating after receiving a ‘Good’ rating across all areas in their latest Ofsted inspection – the school’s first in thirteen years.
The report, published following the inspection in April 2025, highlights the remarkable progress made by the Wirral-based school, recognising its inclusive, caring environment where “pupils are engaged, motivated and committed to their education.”
Inspectors noted that pupils at Portland feel safe, well-supported and proud to belong, acknowledging that they “live out the school’s values” with pride and maturity.
Inspectors noted the school’s focus on improving the curriculum and praised swift and effective actions taken by school and Trust leaders, which have helped pupils to build their knowledge and make meaningful progress. Across all age groups, inspectors reported that pupils benefit from well-structured lessons and increasing opportunities to write widely and develop their vocabulary.
The report also celebrated the school’s culture of respect, kindness and responsibility, with pupils proudly taking part in community-focused activities.
Ofsted reported: “The school places pupils’ wider development at the heart of everything that it does. Pupils develop compassion and respect for others. Theatre visits, museum trips, choir and sports opportunities provide pupils with enriching experiences that broaden their cultural understanding.
“Community safety is promoted through engaging stories and informative workshops. Pupils consistently benefit from this excellent work. They are well-prepared for life in modern Britain.”
Parents and carers also praised the school’s community hub, which provides a lifeline for so many vulnerable pupils and families.
Reflecting on the school’s journey, Head of School, Shaun Leathers, said:
"I am incredibly proud to be the Head of School at such a remarkable school. After years of relentless effort and belief from the staff team, it is truly heartening to see our school finally recognised as 'Good' in all areas for the first time in thirteen years.
“This achievement is a testament to the resilience, passion and dedication of our entire community. I feel so fortunate to work alongside such dynamic and inspiring children and families, and to lead a staff team whose hard work and commitment have never wavered. Their determination to improve and grow has been nothing short of extraordinary, and I’m delighted that we are finally receiving the recognition we deserve. This is a moment of real pride for all of us.”
Katy Bergman, Executive Headteacher, said:
“I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to our entire school community on achieving our first 'Good' Ofsted rating in 13 years.
“This proud milestone is a testament to the unwavering commitment, hard work and belief shared by our staff, students, families and wider community. Portland is a truly inspiring place to be, and I feel honoured to lead such a dedicated and passionate team.”
CEO of Co-op Academies Trust, Dr Chris Tomlinson, said of the news:
“This is a proud moment for Co-op Academy Portland and I want to congratulate Katy, Shaun, the entire staff team and the wider school community for this well-deserved outcome.
“To be judged ‘Good’ in all areas is a testament to a deep commitment to doing what’s right for every child. It reflects the values we hold across our Trust where care, ambition and collaboration drive real change. When the school joined the Trust, it faced major and significant challenges in its environment, culture and educational standards. This outcome shows just how far it has come.”
